Most people don’t know the difference between cosmetic surgery and plastic surgery. In fact, most people think they’re the same thing, or that there are hardly any differences at all. Both procedures have different goals and results, so keep reading to learn more!

Cosmetic Surger y

Patients choose to have cosmetic surgery to improve their appearance. Some of the most common types of cosmetic surgery include breast augmentation, reduction or lift, liposuction, arm lift, body lift, thigh lift, tummy tuck, chin surgery, facial implants, neck lift and many others. Cosmetic surgery is an effective and fast way to improve your body’s physical appearance, symmetry and proportion. It’s considered elective because the areas of the body being treated still function properly.

Plastic Surgery

Plastic surgery also improves the physical appearance of a patient’s body, but for different reasons. This surgical specialty is recommended (or required) for patients with birth disorders, trauma, burns and disease. It corrects or reconstructs parts of the body that have been affected by some sort of medical condition or accident. Some of the most common types of plastic surgery include burn repair surgery, breast reconstruction, scar revision surgery, cleft palate repair surgery, lower extremity reconstruction and many others.

Training requirements are also different for a cosmetic surgeon and plastic surgeon. While 150 cosmetic surgery cases are required to graduate, 300 cosmetic surgery cases must be completed in order to graduate. Plastic surgeons complete training through a post-graduate residency program, and cosmetic surgeons complete training primarily after residency training.

Before we know it, winter will have come and gone, and it will be time to hit the beaches once more! If you’re looking in the mirror and not feeling confident enough to put your swimsuit on, now is the time to make a change – particularly if you have stubborn areas that no amount of diet or exercise will help you tame.

At Wollongong Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery , we can help. We offer a number of different procedures designed to get your body ready for swimming, surfing and sunbaking. Let us help you get the confidence you need to hit the beach with pride! Learn more about some of our procedures below, and call us today to schedule an appointment.

Liposuction Procedures

Do you have stubborn pockets of fat on your thighs, hips, upper arms, abdomen or lateral buttocks? You might have tried every exercise under the sun, but these areas aren’t going away. A liposuction procedure can be the next step. Our surgeon, Dr Mahyar Amjadi, will use blunt-tipped tubes inserted through tiny holes in the skin to suction fat out of the affected areas. The result can be improved contouring and an appearance that makes you smile.

While you can resume normal activities and work within a few days of a liposuction procedure, seeing full results usually takes weeks or even months. This is why it makes so much sense to have the procedure done during the winter. You can let your body recover and adjust, and when summer comes, you’ll be ready!

Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck) Procedures

An abdominoplasty, also known as a tummy tuck , creates a flatter and firmer abdomen. If you exercise regularly and are generally fit, but can’t lose that stubborn stomach fat and folds, a tummy tuck could be perfect for you. Dr Amjadi will contour and sculpt your muscle, skin and other tissues to create the flat stomach you’ve been craving.

This is major surgery, so recovery time is measured in weeks, not days. Because of this, it’s best to have your tummy tuck done long before you want to show off your body. With ample recovery time and close adherence to the doctor’s orders, you’ll be more than ready to wow everyone at the beach when summer comes.

Breast Implants and Augmentation

Of course, some women are perfectly happy with the way their tummies, hips, legs, buttocks and other parts look – it’s their breasts that need a little extra attention. To help those women, we offer various breast augmentation procedures , including breast implants. Dr Amjadi will consult closely with you to determine what your goals are for the procedure. Then, he’ll place silicone breast implants to give your breasts a firmer, larger and natural-looking appearance.

Once again, this is major surgery, so you want to give yourself plenty of time for recovery. You don’t want to have this done the weekend before the big beach party blowout. Having this procedure during the winter or early spring is ideal, as you’ll have plenty of time to rest up and heal before you hit the beach in your new bikini.

A Little Prep Now Can Mean a Faster Recovery Later

You’ve finally done it – you’ve decided to take the leap and get the cosmetic surgery you’ve been wanting. Now it’s time to start preparing. Whether you’ve scheduled a face lift, liposuction procedure, tummy tuck or breast implants, you have a major surgery coming up, and that requires preparation.

We can help! In addition to giving you detailed instructions for the days leading up to surgery and the days following it, we also have lots of general advice for you to use. Keep reading for some great tips on how to get ready for your big day.

Ask Dr Amjadi About Vitamins, Medications and Supplements
There is a wide range of vitamins and supplements on the market today, to say nothing of prescribed medications. While most of these are good for your health, some can thin the blood – not something you want when you’re about to have surgery. Bring a list of the medications, vitamins and supplements you take when you meet with Dr Amjadi for your consultation. He can help you determine which ones you should discontinue before surgery and which you can safely take.

Clear Your Schedule
Liposuction procedures, tummy tucks, breast implants and even some face lifts can all be classified as major surgery. It’s going to take time for you to recover, and you want to give yourself as much time as you can to devote to recovery. Plan to take at least a fortnight off work. Have a care plan in place for the kids. Get your house cleaned and the yard work taken care of, and make sure you have a caretaker for you. Finally, dust off those books you’ve been meaning to read and queue up the TV shows or movies you’ve been planning to watch. You might as well put the time you’ll be resting to good use!

Arrange for Transportation
Most of the surgeries we perform require some kind of anaesthetic, whether it’s a local anaesthetic or a general one. It’s much safer if you don’t drive after being anaesthetised. We may also prescribe painkillers to you, which will also make it unsafe to drive.

Follow Dr Amjadi's Instructions
Every surgery is different, and so is every patient. Depending on the type of surgery you’ve selected and your health status, Dr Amjadi might have specific instructions for you for the days just before surgery. Make sure you follow them closely, and never hesitate to ring the office if you have any questions or concerns.

If you follow these tips, you’ll have done everything you can to ensure that surgery is successful and your recovery is smooth. You’ll be enjoying your beautiful new body before you know it. And if you haven’t even scheduled your consultation yet, what are you waiting for? Now that you know what to expect, be sure to give us a call . We look forward to meeting and helping you!

Today more women and men are considering a face lift or mini face lift to help restore their face to a more youthful appearance. No longer do you have to worry about having a “plastic” or pulled look, as this procedure has been refined and perfected. Having performed so many face lifts, Wollongong Plastic and Cosmetic Surgeries patients tell us that their family and friends say they look like themselves, just more youthful, refreshed and more vibrant!

Face lift surgery restores a more pleasing contour to your face and neck. A face lift can be done alone, or in conjunction with other procedures such as a brow lift, eyelid surgery, or nose reshaping. Ask Mahyar Amjadi and the specialists at Wollongong Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery about the face lift procedure that is right for you, they are the industry leaders for getting a face lift in Wollongong.

Are you a Face Lift Surgery Candidate?
If your face and neck have started to sag you may be a good candidate. Dr. Amjadi can assess your skin’s elasticity and help you determine the appropriate procedure for you. Remember, face lifts have been successfully performed on patients as young as 40 years old and as old as 80 years old.

Options for Your Facelift in Wollongong (Face lift, S-Lift and Mini Lift)
The facelift operation elevates and re-drapes the facial skin and underlying musculature to eliminate laxity and sagging. The operation can be designed to correct problems in the neck, under the jaw and/or chin and in the cheeks. The midface lift (often called a mini facelift addresses sagging in the cheek or middle third of the face) tends to be popular in the younger facelift patient whereas the older patients tend to require a full facelift to address ageing in the lower two thirds of the face.

This change in the type of mini face lift and facelift most common for different age groups is due to the fact that as individuals age, there is a change in the skin just as there are changes in all other parts of the body. Fatty tissue tends to decrease in volume and in density causing the skin to sag and hang loosely. There are also changes in the bony facial structure that, when combined with changes in muscular action and the effects of gravity, leads to more prominent skin folds. These changes are greatest under the chin, in the upper neck and at the skin folds near the corner of the mouth.

The nose as the centre of the face is highly visible. Noses come in all shapes and sizes and it is only when they are out of proportion that they bother people.

People with an Asian background usually want their noses made larger while those with a European background usually want their noses made smaller.

The operation of rhinoplasty is carried out under a general anesthetic in hospital. There is a plaster on your nose for one week after the operation so you will need at least one week off work. It can’t change your life, but it can change your appearance

The next part of the body to age after the eyelids is the neck. Years of exposure to the harsh Australian sun leaves people with wrinkles and bands on the neck. A neck lift helps to restore the appearance of the neck. The procedure can be done as a day case under general anaesthesia. Sometimes a light liposuction is carried out to reduce a fat pad under the chin if it is present. The fat can be removed as a separate procedure if necessary.

As we age lines and loose skin start to appear around the eyelids. The operation of Blepharoplasty tightens up the eyelids and smooths the skin reducing the lines. The lower lids or upper lids can be done separately. If the skin of the upper lids is resting on the eyelashes you can claim something back otherwise the procedure is considered to be cosmetic. Sometimes the procedure can be done under local anaesthesia in the rooms.

If your tummy is loose and uncomfortable then a tummy tuck will help.

It is more of a tightening procedure rather than a weight reduction procedure. It removes that lower roll and makes you feel tight and good again.

It tightens your whole tummy and helps to tighten in your waist line as well. This can be helped by doing a little liposuction at the same time in this area.

If you have unwanted bulges that have grown over the winter months, liposuction can help you get rid of them.

Liposuction can be carried out under the chin, back rolls in the hip thigh and outer buttock areas and for knee rolls. It also helps on the upper arms.

It is a body shaping procedure not a weight loss procedure.
